Barbés CD Release Party!

Thu 06/13
MICHAEL SHERIDAN. Release party for Prelude. Michael Sheridan's debut album "Prélude" showcases this young virtuoso's uniquely mannered approach to a wide range of musical tastes and influences, ranging from rhythmic and passionate South American tangos, bossa and choros to the harmonic richness of French gypsy jazz, with just a touch of Bach for flavor. Sheridan coaxes these songs to vibrant life from his beautiful Brazilian rosewood guitar. Don't be surprised if his resonant, precise melodies have you calling for an encore.

Michael Sheridan, classical guitar hero

Michael Sheridan performs in Mystic Saturday.

It's probably not accurate to say classical guitar is a lost art. But in this soundbite world of what-have-you-done-online-for-me-lately?, where assuredly guitar heroes John Mayer and Jack White will soon star in a reality show about lawn mowing, it's okay that you haven't heard much about contemporary classical guitar or Michael Sheridan.

Because we're telling you about him now.

Sheridan is a top-flight young artist based in New York City and making a significant name for himself within the culture of the music. He appears Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Mystic - and the compelling program includes works by J.S. Bach, Isaac Albeniz, Agustin Barrios, Django Reinhardt, Antonio Jobim and Roland Dyens.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with White or Mayer; every once in a while, though, it's enlightening to see a guitar hero working a different style.
